Surprisingly good battery life. Beautifully designed. Very portable. Optical drive included. Very good processing power. Excellent typing experience. Tremendous bargain.
Mouse buttons are too resistant.

- Bottom Line
The Acer Aspire's 3935 (6504) sleek metallic cover, the 1-inch-thick chassis, and the sheer portability of this system are attributes that customers have been yearning for but hadn't been able to get in such a sweet deal.
Acer has been delivering affordable systems for as long as it has existed, but the majority of them have come with design trade-offs. Often they were too thick or too heavy, or just plain ugly. The Acer Aspire 3935 (6504) ushers in what hopefully will be a new era for the company. Forget the fact that it's a $900 laptop, because Acer is widely known for being a price aggressor. The sleek metallic cover, the 1-inch-thick chassis, and the sheer portability of this system are qualities that customers have been yearning for but hadn't been able to get in such a sweet deal. Pairing aesthetics with good performing parts further cements the Aspire 3935 as the new Editors' Choice for our budget category.
PC makers earn their living from trade-offs: The Apple MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum), for instance, is remarkably desirable from a design standpoint, but many customers aren't willing to pay Apple's premiums. The affordable HP Pavilion dv3z, on the other hand, appeals to frugal shoppers, but performance takes a hit because of the AMD parts. The Acer Aspire 3935 is a huge departure from Acer systems like the Aspire 6930G and the Aspire One (10-inch). Gone are the thick plastics (such as those that make the Gateway UC7807u's frame bulky and cumbersome, at close to 1.5 inches thick). They're replaced by brushed aluminum on the lid—a first on an Acer laptop—and it looks absolutely gorgeous. The moldable characteristics of the metals enabled Acer to produce a 1-inch-thick design (dimensions are 12.7 by 9.4 by 1 inches), so the 3935 is almost as thin as the Apple 13-inch (Aluminum). And it's light, too. In fact, at 4.1 pounds, the frame is lighter than that of the Apple 13-inch (4.5 pounds), the Lenovo IdeaPad U330 (4.2 pounds), and the HP dv3z (4.6 pounds).
The 3935's 13.3-inch widescreen is work- and media-friendly, providing plenty of screen real estate for multiple spreadsheet columns or a 720p HD video. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio, so its 1,366-by-768 resolution is slightly different from the 1,280-by-800 resolution of the MacBook's and the dv3z's screens. The scalloped, non-interconnecting keys of the full-size keyboard are another departure from other Acer laptops. They are visibly spaced apart, resembling those of the MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum). The individual keys are slightly bigger than those on the MacBook, and slightly more comfortable. The 3935's touchpad is the tiniest among the systems mentioned in this review, but like the Apple touchpads, it provides multitouch features: You can pinch, scroll, and enlarge files and text by gesturing with two fingers, though during my testing the gestures didn't work or were nonresponsive most of the time. The MacBook 13-inch figured it all out in terms of the sensitivity levels and the fluidness of the gestures. Still, it's a neat idea. My only peeve concerns the mouse buttons, which I found a little too resistant.
The most desirable feature in the 3935 is arguably the built-in, dual-layer DVD burner. If it weren't for that, the system could have been a lot thinner. Adding an internal optical drive might seem like a step back, but many travelers still rely on it for disc-based movies and software. In its most glaring omission, this laptop doesn't have an HDMI-out port, as do the dv3z and the U330. However, leaving it out allowed Acer to include a third USB port. The rest of the features—the 1.3MP webcam, a 5-in-1 card reader, and a 250GB hard drive—are standard on ultraportables. Like all Aspire laptops, the 3935 comes with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.
The 3935 earns our GreenTech Approved award, having acquired certifications from three accredited institutions: Energy Star, EPEAT (Silver), and RoHS. Energy Star is a U.S. government–backed program that helps businesses realize the energy-efficiency potential of their products, while EPEAT and RoHS evaluate products based on a broader range of environmental attributes, including energy efficiency and recyclability. Furthermore, PCMag.com ran its own test to ensure that Acer met our green requirements. We used a P3 Kill A Watt meter to record the amount of energy consumed during idle, sleep, and shutdown states. The Aspire 3935 registered an 11-watt reading in the idle state, which is 3W lower than Energy Star's guidelines. In sleep and shutdown states, it consumed zero watts, which was very impressive.
At this price, you would expect a previous-generation processor like the 2-GHz one found in the Gateway UC7807u, or a value processor like the 2.3-GHz AMD Turion 64 ZM-84 found in the dv3z. The Acer 3935 runs a Penryn-based 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350, which is about two grades below the processor found in the MacBook 13-inch (Intel Core 2 Duo P8600). Helped by its 3GB of memory, the 3935 tied the Lenovo U330 on our video-encoding showdown and beat the MacBook 13-inch by 7 seconds. Out of all the systems mentioned in this review, it registered the top score on the Photoshop CS4 tests, finishing our scripts in 38 seconds flat, a second faster than the U330. Its CineBench R10 score, however, was middle-of-the-road, losing out to both the MacBook and the much larger Acer 6930G.
The 3935's most impressive performance feat was in its battery life—not because the 3935 was the last to drain its battery, but because it managed this with a mere 39-Wh battery. By comparison, the MacBook (45-Wh), the U330 (57-Wh), and the UC7807u (49-Wh) have bigger batteries but couldn't achieve the 3935's 4-hour 50-minute battery score. The dv3z used an 85-Wh battery, which is twice the size of the 3935's, yet it managed only 4:9. Kudos to Acer for cranking this much battery life out of such a small unit. A bigger, eight-cell battery is also available, but you can get it only in Europe. Still, it's nice to know that the 3935 can be fitted with a bigger battery.
The list of achievements goes on and on for the Acer Aspire 3935 (6504). It says a lot when a company can produce a gorgeous design at a price many, including myself, would call a bargain. The 1-inch-thick metallic design and surprisingly good battery score alone are merits worthy of an Editors' Choice. On top of these fabulous attributes, the 3935 is equipped with good performing parts and ample features, and thus earns our GreenTech seal of approval. Not too shabby, eh?
